Early bird (that is ... DISCOUNT!) registration for Festival of Sails closes on 30th November
Hi all. Early bird registration for the Festival of Sails finishes on 30th November - this Saturday. So enter before then and save $50! Your Committee has put a lot of effort into getting a great seven race program for multis this year, so we are looking for plenty of multis to support the event in January. Race entry has been kept the same as last year and this is for seven races - there were only four races last year, so the value is pretty fair.
Looking forward to seeing as many of our members there as possible, plus any other multis we can attract (please encourage any multi owners you know who are not members to come along too).
Cheers, Charles Meredith (Commodore)

Round Phillip Island Race 7th December - from Tom Boschma
On Saturday 7th December 2013 the Newhaven Yacht Squadron is running the annual round Phillip Island race. While the race has been for club members in keel boats (and some larger TS boats) last year's interest by some multihull skippers has propted the NYS to open up this event to any westernport club members and to mulithulls.
The requirements are- Declaration of Cat 4, GPS position reports over VHF every 2 hours, e-perb, min 2 crew.
The race starts in the morning just after low tide (to get under bridge) in Cleeland Bight, and finishes at the starboard mark in the Newhaven channel. If the weather is strong, skippers can elect to do instead the "half Island" race which stays inside Westernport , down to McHaffies reef and back. Multis from Hastings can get an overnight berth in the marina (must apply first- and fold floats in)
The NOR, Sailing instructions and application form are all on the NYS web site. Entry is $18. We need three multis to form a division. One is already in. NYS has not organised any prizes as it does not know if there will be any interest. This race is the most prestigious event of the season.
Could interested skippers let me know so I can keep NYS worded up? Thanks Tom Boschma Member NYS and MYCV tomboschma@yahoo.com.au

Simon McKeon to speak at AGM!
We have been able to get a fantastic speaker for the MYCV Annual General Meeting - Simon McKeon!
Simon, a long term MYCV member, has been Australian
of the Year, a past world sailing speed record holder and a long term
multihuller, as well as a successful businessman and philanthropist. He is
regarded as one of Australia’s best speakers, so be sure to come along and hear
him.
The AGM will be held at 7.00 pm on Thursday 19th September at Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron, Pier Road, St Kilda. The bar will be open and excellent meals are available there (please arrive early if you plan to eat). Simon's talk will start at 7.30.
You are welcome to invite friends to come along (and especially potential new members), but of course only financial members can vote in the AGM. All financial members should have received a formal notice of the AGM by email - please email floyd.lisa.m@edumail.vic.gov.au if you have not received yours.

Yachting Australia announcement about Silver and Gold cards
Yachting
Australia and the State Associations have agreed that Yachting Australia will
not issue physical cards as a matter of course to Silver and Gold card holders.
For this coming season, the Silver and Gold Cards will only be available on an
opt in basis for Clubs. MYCV has decided that for the 2013-14
season we would like our members to continue to receive a card. You will
therefore receive a card and letter from Yachting Australia in the month after we
update the Yachting Australia database, myClub.
All club members,
irrespective of whether their club has indicated that they would like them to
receive a card for this coming year or not, can access a printable PDF online
via mySailor. This includes your Sailor Identification Number, your club name (and
other clubs of which you are a member) and any Yachting Australia qualifications
you hold (in which case you will receive a Gold Card).
The online card also
evidences that a sailor is entitled to race in compliance with the Racing Rules
of Sailing (Rule 46 Person in Charge and Rule 56 Crew).
The benefits cardholders
receive remain unchanged, including Personal Accident Insurance and access to
offers from Yachting Australia Loyalty Partners. You do not need a physical
card to access these benefits, but you do need to have up to date information
on mySailor.
To
ensure a smooth transition to the online card system, all club members are
asked to update their details on mySailor, in particular a current email
address. A current email address will allow you to retrieve your password if
forgotten. If you don’t have a current email address in the system and need to
retrieve your password you will need to contact the club directly to enter it
for you. Your letter from Yachting Australia will tell you what is currently on
your mySailor account and how you can update it.
It’s
important to note that by having a Sailor Identification Number an individual
is not a member of Yachting Australia. Your club is a member of, and pays an
affiliation fee to, the State Association which in turn is a member of and pays
a fee to Yachting Australia, allowing both organisations to continue to support
clubs across the country in numerous ways.
The
cost savings made by not mailing a physical card will be invested in developing
and promoting sailing. In particular it will enable a significant investment to
move the Sailing Information and Management Systems (myCentre, myClass, myClub,
myWebsite and mySailor) to a new provider and platform, Sporting Pulse Ltd, a
major provider of information technology solutions to many Australian sports.
It
will also enable continued development and funding of the Discover Sailing
Program, (www.discoversailing.org.au)
which aims to increase participation in sailing and club membership.

ORCV Winter Series - Melbourne to Geelong race 7 September
Had a chat with several of the Offshore Racing Club of Vic (ORCV) committee members recently, and they are very open to exploring having a multihull division in their races. They have invited MYCV boats to join their Melbourne-Geelong race on September 7 (election day!). Its a Category 5 race (same as FOS passage race), but has a more interesting course, with an initial leg down the Bay (various options depending on weather) before turning to Geelong. Have a look at www.orcv.org.au for more details. Peccadillo and Patronus are up for it, but we really need 3-4 boats to make a division. I know a lot of members are up at Airlie at the moment (Fifty-fifty is doing well I hear), but if anyone is interested to enter, please contact me on 0419 280 322. Cheers, Charles Meredith

Multihulls in the 2013 Three Peaks Race
I'm writing from Peccadillo, docked in Coles Bay on the Freycinet Peninsula in Tasmania. We were in a commanding position at the front of the fleet until 1830 yesterday when we lost our rudders (yes, both of them!). At 18 knots under spinnaker it was an interesting moment but incredibly fast reactions by Dave Blake and Phil Remilton got the spinnaker in before disaster ensued. The multihull baton has been passed to Steve Laird's 42 ft Chamberlain, and he is currently in lead. Hope he wins - great team and regular competitors who are really sailing their boat to its potential this year, with the bonus of a fast running team. The other multi, the Simpson 30 of Peter Newman, is running 4th.
Until our rudder debacle, we had had a fantastic race on Peccadillo, smashing the leg record from the start to Lady Barron (Flinders Island) previously held by Twisted Sister (1997) by 1 hr 20 mins. We were going fast for most of the second leg until we hit a big wind hole and slowed down but were still well ahead of the rest of the fleet. Then .... oh well, that's yacht racing!

Sailing WITH TEETH
While the travelers in the club were competing at Marley Point, I stayed back and sailed with Mark and Jane on With Teeth. It was a lovely day 30d with 10kts most of the time blowing, Course 26 picked for the day, up round middle spit with a ripper spinnaker run between the mud banks.
And I would have to say the team were pretty happy after the spinnaker run with the lead boats not that far in front. PHC victors for sure and they were lucky we weren't racing under OMR because we had that covered as well. Rounding the bottom mark up to the finish and our tacking angles weren't the best, but we sailed well to the finish very happy with ourselves.... Until we were told the other boats had been in for 1.5 hours waiting. Top speed for the day 22kts
Key notes:
1. Mark sailed OK.
2. Jane and Tim crew brilliantly.
3. Jib needs work.
4. Main needs work.
5. Boat sails better once centreboard is down.
6. With Teeth is a heavy boat.
7. Don't need 7 clips from a 50f mono to clip spinnaker bag on to net.
Overall a great day sailing...
